Our Eczema Trials – Immune Balancer
I’ve tried a lot of things in attempts at curing my son’s eczema. He’s come a long way since the head-to-toe severe eczema he had just one year ago. March 2011 is when things started to change for us. In this “Our Eczema Trials” series I will do my best to recap our successes and failures. Will these things work for your child? Maybe. Maybe not. We all know – what works for one child may not work for the next. So, if you choose to follow this series, please let us know – what worked for you, what didn’t. We can all learn from one another.
Now onto, the Immune Balancer
Tristan has been taking Moducare Immune System Support Multi-Vitamins
(not an immune booster, which many people use just as they’re starting a cold or sickness), a natural tablet for kids, for almost a year now. It contains sterols and sterolins from white pine. According to the company it “is especially formulated to restore, strengthen and balance the immune system of your child. This formulation has been found to be effective at enhancing an underactive immune system and/or modulating an overactive one. Taken daily, it also helps prevent bacterial and viral infections and is a strong anti-inflammatory.”
Tristan’s skin has been beautiful most of this time he’s been taking this supplement, other than the occasional flare-up when he’d been sick or he mistakenly ate something he shouldn’t have. We stopped giving it to him two weeks ago to see if we’d notice a difference in his skin. Although supplements can be great, I don’t want to give him something his body doesn’t need. During the two weeks he’s had no other lifestyle changes. A few days ago I noticed his skin had gotten quite a bit worse. Pink around the eyes, dry pink eczema patches on his face and neck. Worse around the wrists, but they’ve been pretty irritated all winter. It seems that he must have been getting gradually worse since we stopped the immune balancer. Also, just two days ago he all of a sudden reacted to the Makeda unrefined shea butter we’d been using on his face, usually with great results. Today we tried the Boo Boo cream on his face instead. Same reaction. He has NEVER reacted to these products before.
My only conclusion – the immune balancer really worked for him. We’re starting it up again tomorrow. I expect his skin will start improving and will back to beautiful in a few weeks time. I sure hope that’s the case……
Has anyone else tried any sort of immune therapy? Balancers? What were the results?
FROM: Eczema
Yes, I gave Moducare to my son with severe eczema for many years. I cannot say for sure if it did or didn’t make any difference. I did not notice a difference when I discontinued it and his skin cleared up long after he stopped taking it. I like to think that it may have contributed to building up his very weak immune system over time but I have no definite proof of that. I had high hopes for it but never saw anything positive or negative to attribute to it. Sorry…not sure if that is helpful or not but thought you would be interested to know we did try it. I still think, for my son, the combination of Evening Primrose Oil and Flax Seed Oil is what has made a bigger differnence in his life. Skin wise and behavioural. Yes, it’s so hard to say. I’m fairly confident the moducare and one of the homeopathic tinctures are helping Tristan because I took them out of his diet individually for some time, with no other diet changes, and we did notice his skin started worsening. So, we’re going to keep with these things for now. Maybe in another year we’ll try removing them again. Every child (and adult) seems to be so different in what works. So glad you found what works for your son! I just hope sharing some of the things that worked for us may bring some relief to at least one child. Here’s hoping!
Susan what was the combination of evening primrose and flax seed oil you did?
Hi,
Please disregard my previous comment I just clicked on the link you provided for the immune balancer. Are you still using it? Did it continue to make a difference? I know every child is different and they all react differently to things but just for my peace of mind as I’m looking into starting it. We find the fish oil and vitamin D supplements did somewhat improve the flare ups a bit. Apart from that can you please write an article on children psoriasis/eczema of the scalp.
Hi Liz –
My son was only on the immune booster for six months I believe. Then his skin was improved enough with it and the other things mentioned in this post that we could discontinue it’s use.
