Day 82 Update: Elimination Diet
Yes, I’m still on the elimination diet from Whole Life Nutrition. It’s been a L-O-N-G time. As the diet is winding down I find that I’m really not following it exactly as I should. I’ve just become too impatient and ready to finish this thing. As I’m reintroducing the really commonly irritating foods (eggs, glutenous grains, yeast, etc.) I just don’t have the patience to wait the recommended 3-5 days or longer before adding something else back in to the diet. So, I confess, after eating cheese one day, I was fine, so I added corn the next day, again I was fine. So, I ate cheese again two days later and it tore up my stomach. Despite the obvious delayed reaction to cheese, I continue to add in a new food each day. Apparently when it comes to myself, I am just a bit careless. Now, if this was my child, as I’ve proven with his elimination diet to help determine eczema triggers, I’d be by the book, no questions asked. Why oh why can’t I do the same for myself? Sigh.
Ready for the results so far?
Instant abdominal bloating and heartburn
- Tamari Wheat-Free
- Yeast
- Vinegar (any kind)
- Mushrooms
- Grapes
- Occasionally berries and nuts
- Heavy red wines (heartburn only)
- Eggs (stomach discomfort, only if eaten straight – don’t affect me in baked goods)
Grapes naturally contain high levels of yeast on their skins, as do prunes, and many berries (actually more of a mold). Some nuts really bothered me on occasion as they can also be moldy, though not to the eye usually.
Itching (neck and jaw)
- Grapes
- Blueberries
- Raspberries
- Pineapple
- Coconut
Acne/Redness
- Coconut
- Pineapple
- Refined Sugar and/or Chocolate
The redness is restricted to my nose. The acne, a couple small t-zone pimples, didn’t appear overnight and was more from several days consuming one or more of the foods above. I’m fairy sure dairy adds to the acne too, but I can’t prove this.
Lack of Energy and/or Headache
- Barley
- Spelt
- Refined Sugar
- Chocolate
So, based on my reactions to yeast containing foods (pretty much everything in the category that caused instant bloating and heart burn), my nutritionist and naturopath friend has told me I have a candida yeast overgrowth. So, lucky, lucky me, I get to finish up with this elimination diet only to jump right into a candida diet, which is even more restrictive because there are no sweets, not even fruits, allowed! Oh man, what have I gotten myself into?
Stay tuned. Next up, candida diet. Oh the joy.
Here are a list of past posts about this elimination diet.
