Meet New Eczema Contributor – Itchin Since ’87

By Ashley of Itchin Since ’87 (See bio below)

Eczema, what a bizarre skin condition it is. I’ve been dealing with atopic dermatitis aka eczema since the age of two. I like to joke around by saying there is truth to the “terrible twos.”

When the doctor diagnosed me with eczema my mother was heartbroken, as she learned there was no known cure. She mentioned how hard it was to watch a two year old continuously scratch her skin off. At the time she didn’t know any better and tried everything to cure it. We used multiple steroids (not a good idea), creams, lotions, injected shots, oatmeal baths and pretty much anything else you could think of. Some worked. Some didn’t. Overall, nothing was permanent. I am 27 now and STILL suffering from this horrible condition. In fact, I wear gloves at night to keep from scratching in my sleep.

In November of 2014 I was laid off from an amazing start-up company. This led me to pursue my passion. For years, I’ve followed different bloggers and always knew I wanted to start one myself. It was clear that beauty, food, travel and fashion were top dog among the categories. An while I admire these websites, I always felt like something was missing.

Thus my quest to start Itchin Since ’87. I wanted to approach eczema and other skin conditions in a different way. To be informative, but also bring laughter. In addition, my plan is to raise awareness. I feel as though skin conditions and diseases get neglected.

Its 2015, we have drones, self-driving cars, flown to mars, hoverboards, GPS systems and pretty much anything at our finger tips, yet we don’t have a cure for a continuous painful itch. For 25 years I’ve suffered with little to no progress. While there’s a plethora of things that can help manage it, nothing cures it (that I know if). The sad part is that eczema is actually becoming more common. So not only do I want to raise awareness, but I want to prevent it altogether.

Starting Itchin Since ’87 has been a blessing and one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. My website has connected me with people from all over the world who are going through the same thing. It helped me discover websites like The Eczema Company and websites such as this one, It’s an Itchy Little World. I love reading other peoples stories and nodding my head because I know exactly what they are going through. We’re all in this together.

If I can help in any way, shape or form to take eczema down I will. I’m passionate, dedicated and ready. Lets find a cure!

OMG, thank you for this blog I have had eczema for only 6 mo but it has pretty much stopped me in my tracks. My doctor told me I was at the end of the line, treatment wise! The only thing left is some sort of injectable… side affect; anaphalayctic shock and i would have to carry an epi-pen… the uv lights burned me… I am working with a homeopath and I’ve found a few things that semi-stop the itch! I am also taking high cbd/low thc weed to sleep at night..why or why can’t they make something to suppress this, besides steroids… although who doesn’t love no rash and that feeling of power… yes the little bumps etc return with a vengeance when the drug is stopped..

Nice blog. I love the fact that you want to make people aware of Eczema. This is my goal in life, hence I have started writing my own blogs about my own experiences but most importantly caring for my son who has very bad eczema. I hope your personal battle with eczema goes well. Good luck

I’ve had Atopic Dermatitis for a little over 2 years, covering almost my entire body, making me look like a lobster except for a few white spots of my natural skin. I’ve tried everything, but there is a drug that requires an injection that is very expensive unless one has a good insurance policy. It’s called Dupixent. My insurance wants me to try Tacrolimus, a prescribed ointment, for six weeks (twice a day). I have used it for a week and a half, and I see improvement with the lightening of the rash, but still have itching. If nothing else, this would relieve me of the embarrassment of being out in public. The itching is a great problem and sometimes only get 4 hours of sleep. My doctor has agreed to give me a sedative so I’m doing better now with that aspect. Hope this helps somebody with the same problems. You know it is incurable, so you just have to suck it up!

As a parent, you aim to give your child a happy and healthy life, but what if they suffer from eczema? The uncontrollable urge to itch and the unknown causes may be too much for you and your child to bear. As a parent, what are you to do?

does anyone have any good recommendations for foundations and concealers that won’t make my eczema look flaky and dry? That can be used without looking all flared up in my daily everydayhealth.

Hi Heather – Not yet, but we hope to have a post about that soon. Check out the Allergista, she has some tips I think.

That’s my problem too (Atopic Dermatitis). I’ve even lost my hair because of the rash and flaking everywhere. Now wearing wigs and sunglasses.

Are any adults here using Dupixent? How does it work for you?
