About the book

“The Case of the Itch and the Rash” takes some of the medical jargon typically used when discussing eczema and explains it in an easy to understand format along with illustrations. The story is about Malcolm Finney (a forth grade medical detective) and his mission to identify what caused his friend, Carlita, to develop a rash and itchy skin. In the end the two sleuths are able to determine that Carlita has eczema and with the help of Carlita’s doctor, they find the right moisturizer and skincare program to clear up Carlita’s skin before her ballet recital.

Although the book is targeted for slightly older children, my 4.5 year old was really interested in the book when it arrived. He “read” it cover to cover alone and then asked me to read it to him. He listened intently through all 50 pages. I thought the medical explanations would be too much for him, but he was interested and asked questions. I guess he’s heard the word eczema in our house for so long and had never really seen a medical diagram of the condition or heard the condition explained in terms he could understand, so he was enthralled.

Don’t forget to add a comment to enter the giveaway for a copy of this book! Contest ends April 30, 2013!

Ooh, my daughter’s only 4.5, too, but I bet she’d love to check it out! We have her eczema under control on the surface (no active rash), but she still itches on the inside and I’d love to be able to explain more to her about how/why it all happens.

I’m sure she’d really be interested since she’s so close to my son’s age. Good luck Selena!

I’ve waited for what seems like forever to be able to send my kids to a safe camp and lo and behold, our district is now starting school in early August? How does that happen?

This seems like a dream come true for so many kids!

I have 3 kids with severe eczema, the youngest now 7yrs, I am sure that having a look at this book would give them a better insight to their disease!!! There is only so much a parent can try to explain, they all have asthma and multiple food allergies(one anaphylactic) so we have a very busy household 😉

    Thanks
    Angela

That sounds like my son – the fun atopic triad 🙂 You are so right about explaining eczema – books and pictures will make it much easier for them.

Hi Jen – Have you figured out some of his triggers? Sounds like he may have some more. Are you supplementing with fish oil and probiotics as well? I’d love to help if I can. Send me an idea if you want to toss ideas around. jennifer@eczemacompany.com Thanks!

My daughter is 19 months and has been dealing with eczema since she was 2 months old. Over the last 6 months, we have discovered some triggers – which has helped a lot! I would love to be entered into the contest. And I saw a link to more books on the website, so I’m headed there after I’m done posting this to take a look!

    • Jennifer on April 10, 2013 at 1:05 pm

Hi Cindy – Finding the triggers is the hardest part. Once you have that done, everything else seems to fall into place, or so it did in our case. Congrats to you guys! I’m happy your little one is on the way to finding some relief! Good luck with the contest and enjoy the other eczema books. Jennifer

Ha, no way! My younger son is named Malcolm! My 3 year old has been dealing with eczema since birth and has severe food allergies. He’s very bright, and is a voracious reader. He’d really get a kick out of the main character sharing his brother’s name. I’m happy to have learned about this series!

What a lovely little book! As adults we forget that children often find the condition confusing and even frightening. We’ll certainly recommend this book to our customers who have children with eczema.

I have 2 kids with eczema. My 3 year old has it much worse than my 6 year old because he has tons of food & pet allergies. This would be a great tool to explain to them whats going on.
