Eczema Society of Canada – National Awareness Month
November is eczema awareness month in Canada. To help raise funds for awareness, The Eczema Company will donate $1 from every sale in November to the Eczema Society of Canada. It’s a fantastic organization run by Executive Director, Amanda Cresswell-Melville. To jump-start awareness month, let’s get to know Amanda and why she chose to work with the Eczema Society.
Jennifer: Why did you chose to start working with Eczema Society of Canada? Do you have a personal connection with eczema?
Amanda: My son Nathan was diagnosed with severe eczema as an infant, and it profoundly impacted not only his life, but our family life. His entire body was covered in red, raised, bumpy, raw skin. He was miserable, and not sleeping, and therefore my husband and I were not sleeping either! He was suffering terribly, and our doctor didn’t know what to do. Our lives were changed dramatically when we saw a paediatric dermatologist, and when we got support from the Eczema Society of Canada. I started volunteering with the organization almost immediately, and it eventually led to my becoming the Executive Director.
Jennifer: What’s the best part of working for the Eczema Society?
Amanda: Truly, it is connecting with people suffering with eczema, and providing help and hope. So often the missing piece of eczema management is (1) understanding that the condition needs multifaceted skin and lifestyle management, and (2) having someone who understanding and empathizes with your struggle. We try and address those two needs.
Jennifer: Can you share one success story with us?
Amanda: The success stories really are endless! I can tell you first hand about our success with Nathan. At first we thought there was no hope for Nathan’s severe condition, however with the right knowledge of how to manage the condition, and the right treatments, we were able to significantly improve his skin. His condition still requires constant management, however we now have built his skincare routine into our lifestyle. It is as second nature as twice daily tooth brushing.
Jennifer: What advice would you give to someone just diagnosed with eczema?
Amanda: I would tell them that there is hope! This condition can be well managed, and even though it may be a frustrating chronic condition, there are self help measures that you can take to manage it. I would also recommend visiting the Eczema Society of Canada for information and support. We can help.
Thank you Amanda! The Eczema Society of Canada will be hosting a series of free eczema educational events across Canada. Check below for a location near you.
