Eczema Moms: Shit We Say

You must have seen all the hilarity going around. The first one I saw was “Sh*t Crunchy Mamas Say – Part Two.” I could so relate and just loved it! Then I read a post by Allergy-Free Vintage Cookery called “Sh*t Allergy Moms Say.” Again, loved it! So, now it’s time for………

Sh*t Eczema Moms Say

It’s called eczema. Egg – zee- mah.

No, it’s not contagious.

What are your triggers?

Can I read the ingredient label?

Does it contain alcohol?

Will it burn/sting?

Two words – elimination diet.

How can I stop the itching?

How can I prevent him from scratching?

Yes, it’s time for your cream again.

Isn’t he supposed to grow out of this?

Did you take the blood or skin test?

Have you had allergy testing done?

What supplements are you taking?

Ever heard of UV therapy?

Do you bleach bath?

Wet wraps are awesome!

It is 100% cotton?

Not another flare-up!

Are there any side effects?

Will he ever go to sleep?

Is that another infection?

I’m so tired!

Stop scratching!

How many times a day should I apply it?

Does it go on top or under his moisturizer?

Look at that airplane! Let’s read this book! Let’s go play…just STOP SCRATCHING!

He can’t eat that – it will make his skin flare.

I know it’s itchy and it hurts, and I’m sorry, but it’s going to feel better soon.

We even tried NAET and homeopathy.

Can’t do dairy, but we love hemp!

Did hazelwood jewelry work for you?

You went to National Jewish? Wow! Was it awesome?!

We can’t use laundry detergents, but we love soap nuts.

Oh no, it’s too hot in here, he’s going to get itchy.

Where’s the cream?

It’s due to a leaky gut.

It’s an immune imbalance.

Yes, I had eczema and allergies too – must be hereditary.

What’s that noise? Is he scratching?!!

But she told me this cream was the miracle cure.

Quick! Get the nail clippers!

I know you have something to add…..BRING IT!!!!!!

Stuff people say to Eczema kids:

“Have you gone to a dermatologist?”

“Why don’t you just put some cream on it.”

    “Why do you look sick?”

    “Will you outgrow it?”

    “STOP scratching!”

No, he’s not been running around
    It’s just eczema
Yes, I have tried that remedy
    pat it, don’t scratch
if you scratch it makes it worse
    just relax
    put cream on
    time to put cream on
    you missed a spot
    go get the cream
    put the cream on properly
stand still and let me put the cream on
do you have cream with you
    put cream in your bag

    • Jennifer on March 13, 2012 at 8:54 pm

To all mothers and care givers of kids with eczema, I am impressed with your strength and ability to carry on doing what you have to to help your little sufferers. As a grandmother I do what I can to help my family but I know mothers bear the brunt of the condition. You have said it all in your poems and comments. It is good that you can keep your sense of humour, and to share your thoughts and feeling with others. My heart goes out to you all. Keep up your wonderful work and remember to look after yourselves too.

    • Jennifer on March 19, 2012 at 11:42 am

Hi Judy – Thank you for such a lovely comment. It means so much to hear from you and to have your support. Dealing with eczema is so challenging, the only way to get through it is to have a good support network and to keep a sense of humor. Jennifer

    How about:

When do I stop using the steroid cream?
    But it never goes away!
Go and sit with the fan until you cool off.
Step outside (into the cool winter air) and cool off.
I know he seems underdressed for the weather but he has eczema.
No, he won’t be too cold…he feels the temperature differently…he has eczema.
It still has not gone away.

I am sure more will come to me…the one’s so far I can so relate to…been there…said that!

Yes, those are great! Gosh, don’t you feel like you could just write a book about it!!! Ha!

  11. Eliza on September 8, 2012 at 5:37 pm

As a daughter with eczema a common thing I’ve always heard, “Keep putting your cream on… It won’t work if you don’t use the cream!” No matter how much I explain it to her (my mom) she doesn’t get that the cream just makes me itch more and irritate it (even though its supposed to help me. Frustrating!

    • Jennifer on September 10, 2012 at 9:30 am

Hi Eliza – It sounds like you haven’t found a good cream yet. It must have something you’re allergic to in it. What are you using? What are your known allergies? Jennifer

      • Eliza on September 10, 2012 at 3:48 pm

I use elidel (not sure on spelling) for the most part, I also use Triamisalone (again I’m not too good with the spelling). I’m not sure what lotions or other things I’m allergic to other than different foods. I have tried using hydrocortisone once or twice and I had a reaction to that as well.

MY NEPHEW HAS HORRIBLE ECZEMA. HE IS 5 YEARS OLD AND HAS HAD IT EVER SINCE BIRTH. MY SISTER HAS TRIED EVERYTHING, AND I MEAN EVERYTHING…FROM ALL NATURAL TO OVER THE COUNTER TO EXTRMELEY EXPENSIVE STEROIDS. SOME OF THE TREATMENTS DID HELP MANAGE HIS ECZEMA, BUT NOTHING REALLY EVERY TRULY HELPED. ABOUT A MONTH AGO MY SISTER STARTED USING SPECIAL OIL ON HIM THAT IS MADE FROM THE BOTANICAL PLANT MORINGA OLEIFERA. SHE JUST PUTS IT ON HIM WHEREVER HE IS BROKEN OUT AND WITHIN A WEEK ALL OF HIS SYMPTOMS WERE GONE…NOW THIS OIL DOES NOT CURE ECZEMA…BUT IT SURE HAS MADE ALL OF THE SYMPTOMS DISSAPEAR. MY NEPHEW PARKER CALLS IT HIS “MAJIC POTION” 🙂 LET ME KNOW IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO KNOW MORE ABOUT IT…ALSO I HAVE PICS OF BEFORE AND AFTER IF YOU WOULD LIKE ME TO EMAIL THEM TO YOU. I SURE HOPE YOU FIND SOMETHING THAT HELPS…I KNOW HOW FRUSTRATING IT IS…

    • Jennifer on October 12, 2012 at 9:17 am

That’s wonderful! This plant is new to me, so yes, I’d love to learn more about it. Please email me. Thanks!

Things I hear other people say:

    Is he contagious?
Have you tried taking out dairy?
    Have you heard of pinetarsol?
Why does he look like that?
Will he grow out of it one day?
Gosh the skin really does flake like snow doesn’t it?
Why would you get no sleep?
Do you cream him? (um duh!)
    Has he seen a specialist?
Surely it isn’t that bad, just tell him not to scratch it
Don’t worry, I hear it is a stage thing
Oh yes, a friend of a friends cousin had something like this and they did……
    I know this lovely naturopath

Things I say to my son:

    Does that itch?
    Drink your medicine
    I hear that scratching!
    Does that sting your lips?
Time to slip slop slap and wrap!
    Just rub it
If you touch that you will flare up
Yes hunni it is a cat, and no you cannot touch it
Yes you have to wear your mittens, it’s for the best
No, you are not eww..Don’t listen to anyone
    Yes, you are beautiful

    Things I say to myself:

If only there was a miracle cure
Gosh that cream was so expensive, why didnt it work?
I will have to try this one..its only $100 per 100ml!
How much were the wet wraps again?
How long do I use this steroid and when do I drop down to the next strength?
Did I not breast feed long enough
Is it something in my blood?
Did I feed him in the wrong order?
Was it something I ate in my pregnancy?
Should I buy a bubble suit for him? That might help?
    Is it my fault?
Eczema booklet to daycare, friends and all family = Check!
Argh this emulsifying ointment is like candle wax on my skin!
    Here we go again!
I know! I will allergy proof my house and stay in it so he never flares up!
Should he go to daycare? There are allergens there that flare him up……
Wow..Im sure there wasn’t milk powder in this product the last time I got it
There sure is cornflour in everything isn’t there
Where are those blimmen nail clippers!!!! I have like 6 of them around here somewhere
Did I use soap nut or washing powder with that sheet?
I wonder what his IgE levels will be now….

    • Jennifer on June 5, 2013 at 10:49 am

Hi Kazia – An EXCELLENT and very accurate list to add. Thank you for that! I can relate to too many of these too. My favorite is “slip slop slap and wrap” – cute expression that my five year old would love. And like you, I blamed myself for his eczema, it’s possible it’s something we did during pregnancy or even earlier, but we’ll never and most importantly it wasn’t intentional. So, we can’t blame ourselves – it will just bring us down farther and we must be there for our children, to help them through their condition. Jennifer

I am spreading the word to as many moms of kids with eczema as i can…. My daughters eczema is gone!!!!

A friend of mine introduced me to a wellness company that specializies in helping ppl litterally eliminate eczema! It has helped my daughter, and i passed it on to my friend, who’s 6 yr old sons eczema was so bad that it bled…now his is gone too. this is no joke! I am a nurse, and in school we were not taught that it is reversable. i am telling you that i am seeing it gone in 2-4 weeks!! There is literally no trace that my daughter ever had it at all. I have no doubt in my mind that this company will be able to help you too. ITs worth a try, if you or your child is still suffering, just email me and ill give you the info that i was given:) please look at this info, doctors are not telling us this, but our babies do not need to suffer with this anymore!!

I hope this helps you all 🙂
