Natural Skincare Solutions for Your Eczema Child

I am a big fan of SafeMama, who is an expert in the green parenting community. If you remember, I spoke about her once before as she was one of the recipients of my Liebster Award. So, I was honored beyond words when she asked me to share my recommendations for natural skincare for eczema children with her followers.

Following is an exert. If you wish to read the full post, you may do so here.

Expert Guest: Natural Skincare for Kids with Eczema

One of the most frequent questions I get from parents is “What can I use on my baby/child with eczema that’s safer?”  So please welcome my guest expert Jennifer of  It’s an Itchy Little World and  founder of The Eczema Company.  She has a child with eczema and shares her wisdom with us!  Check out Jennifer’s tips and recommendations for testing new products and for finding the right skin care for your child:

“What works for one child’s skin, may not work for another.”

This is the phrase that plagues me as a mother of a child with eczema. I wish I could tell you this isn’t true.  I know I am not the only one who has spent countless dollars on a closet full of half used products full of promise. Each product was sworn to be the eczema miracle because it worked for a friend’s child.  It’s true, some children’s eczema is mild enough that once you do find the right moisturizer, their skin will vastly improve. But for many kids, cream is not enough. Finding the triggers is critical for these children, whether it’s food allergies, hot/cold temperatures, detergents, fragrances, environmental allergies, etc. Identify the trigger and find the best skincare treatment and your child will be well on their way to healthier skin.

There is a moisturizer that will work best for your child, but finding it may require patience. There are many great natural ingredients that have powerful eczema healing properties. Here is a list of those that have proven most beneficial. These ingredients are available in a variety of products to include in an eczema skin treatment program – gentle soaps/cleansers, creams, balms, salves, bath oils, bath soaks, etc.

Thanks! I really enjoyed writing that post as I found it really hard to find a good source of info back when I needed to know what was best on eczema.

There are so many products on the conventional shelf, but to hear from a mama who’s sought out the best product that worked for her children is really helpful. Thank you!

When my eldest son was covered in eczema we went through a lot of different creams trying to find the right one for him. He was so sensitive. I remember going to the pediatrician crying over my son’s skin. He called up the dermatologist in the building and he took us right away. He recommended a cream for us to use…it was horrible! My son screamed like I was applying acid to his skin…needless to say, the dermatologist was dumbfounded and actually took offence to our experience stating that everyone loves that cream! We moved on and found another dermatologist and eventually a better cream! My experience has taught me that eczema can be triggered by an accumulation of variables. Now that my son’s skin is clearer…we can varify more easily some of the individual triggers that we were never 100% sure of when he was younger…oranges, cantelopes, stress, and overheating. We also worked on healing from the inside out…increasing his immune system and good bacteria in his gut. It was a very long road to follow…but worth the journey…he is a happy, smart and healthy teen!

Oh yes, right there with you! Most the drug store creams – anything with any form of alcohol really – burns my son like we poured acid on him. It’s awful. Try finding even natural products without alcohol, so difficult. None of the products in my store contain alcohol as I know how painful it can be for children – especially when a child has a bad flare-up. And I know all about trying all those creams and spending $$$ trying to find the best one. I thought a cream would cure Tristan at first, before I realized it was just to help with the dryness and that we had to find his triggers to heal his eczema. Agh, looking back at all the things I wish I had known 🙂
