If you’re dealing with itchy, red, dry and irritated skin, you naturally want to find soothing relief. Rather than turning to steroid creams, many people are interested in natural and healthier alternatives. A popular home remedy is shea butter – a plant based moisturizer. Read on to learn more about shea butter for eczema and how you can use this moisturizing remedy to find soothing eczema relief.

What is Eczema?

Eczema is an itchy skin condition that’s characterized by oozing skin, red rashes, dryness, scaliness, inflammation and, of course, itchiness. It’s one of the most popular skin conditions in the world, affecting as many as 10-20% of the population. The chronic condition associated with a damaged skin barrier that has trouble retaining moisture – hence the dryness. It can also be triggered by contact with harsh chemicals found in beauty products, certain fabrics like latex, stress, extreme weather conditions, pet fur, sweat, and certain foods. Although there is currently no cure for eczema, it’s possible to manage and prevent symptoms with proper care and treatment.

What is Shea Butter?

Shea butter is a natural fat that comes from the kernels of the shea tree which is native to sub-Saharan Africa.  Because of its ability to hydrate the skin, it’s a common ingredient found in skincare products such as lotion, moisturizers, creams, and face creams. It’s also known for its anti-inflammatory and pain-relieving properties.

Benefits of Shea Butter

Still wondering what’s so great about shea butter? Here are some of the main shea butter benefits for your skin.

It’s ultra-moisturizing

Shea butter is a dream for those with dry skin – which is why it’s commonly found in creams and  moisturizers. It works as an emollient which allows it to hydrate and soften the skin. It also helps improve the skin’s natural barrier and protects the skin from damage from the environment thanks to the presence of fatty acids such as oleic, stearic and linoleic. This allows it to prevent water loss on the first layer of skin, as well as penetrate other layers for an ultra boost of hydration.

It’s anti-inflammatory

Shea butter is great for those with eczema and psoriasis because of its powerful anti-inflammatory properties. You can use it to both nourish and soothe inflamed skin.

It helps heal cuts and scrapes

If scratching is causing your skin to crack or bleed, leading to scarring, shea butter can help quicken the scar-healing process.

How to use Shea Butter for Eczema

While many people use raw shea butter for eczema or use products that contain shea butter with issue, it’s still possible to react negatively to this natural ingredient. If it’s your first time using shea butter, we recommend doing a small patch test before applying it all over your body. A patch test involves putting a small amount of the ingredient on a non-affected part of your skin. A reaction may be instant but it can also take a few days to appear. If no reaction develops, you can safely apply it in larger amounts to cover wider areas.

I am in my 60s and I tried organic Shea butter, After two months of using it on my entire body I had full body eczema. I have contact dermatitis from latex and Shea butter has the same properties and that was the problem.

I have had eczema for 40 years. I tried organic Shea butter on my entire body, and after two months, I broke out in full body eczema.. I have contact dermatitis from latex and Shea butter has the same properties, so do not use it if you’re allergic to latex
